Van Gogh lived in Auvers-sur-Oise for ten weeks to be treated by Dr. Paul Gachet. These turned out to be the last ten weeks of his life, before he shot himself in the head. In this short time period Van Gogh produced over 100 works, including the Town Hall at Auvers.
This painting is based on the view Van Gogh had when he stepped out on the street from Auberge Ravoux, where he rented a room.
