Cypresses

Van Gogh had a remarkable fascination for cypresses. When he was hospitalized because of his mental illness he had permission to paint outside periodically. The cypresses fulfilled a decorative function in his paintings.

In a letter to his brother Theo, he writes about the landscape: “The country around Saint-Rémy is lovely and little by little I am sure I will explore It”.
