Enclosed wheatfield with rising sun

Enclosed wheatfield with rising sun

At the time Vincent created this painting he was hospitalized at the asylum in Saint-Remy. Vincent felt isolated in the asylum, he wanted to paint outside and enjoy the French landscape.

In a letter to his brother Theo he writes:
“My work at least lets me retain a little of my clarity of mind, and makes possible my getting rid of this someday.”
His feeling of isolation resulted in many studies of wheatfields. By this painting, Vincent intended to express the view of the garden of the asylum in the last days of Automn. Vincent observed the wheatfield from his bedroom window.
