Unable to live in Arles on his own without getting crazy he voluntarily entered Saint-Paul-de-Mausole, a psychiatric facility in nearby Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. At the institution, the staff even set up a small atelier for him so he could paint and express his artistic feelings when he had a rare, bright moment. He painted the view of his room and the hallway of the institution. Later he was allowed to leave the institution to paint the surrounding landscapes. The Irises is one of the famous paintings Vincent produced during his hospitalization.
