Van Gogh had very little money and he couldn’t afford models who would pose for him. This made him very creative in finding objects to paint. For instance, he bought these work boots at a market in Paris. He painted more still lives of old shoes and clogs, he found beauty in everyday objects. For Vincent, these work boots were symbolic of the hardness of life.
